The first thing any best man will ask themselves when preparing for best man wedding toasts is “What to Say in a Best Man Speech?”. If you have never been selected as the best man in a wedding before this can be a difficult question to answer. I’ve included here the main points I have discovered that should be a part of any best man speech.
What to Say in a Best Man Speech
You should always open any wedding speech by thanking whoever paid for the reception. This traditionally would be the brides parents. Usually there may be other toasts before or after yours including the groom toasts, maid of honor toasts, or the father of the bride toasts and father of the groom toasts. They will often mention or thank whoever paid for the wedding so if you are not sure you may keep listening for this. If the bride and groom paid for the wedding themselves then you can either thank everyone that helped out or just say something about what a joyous occasion it is to be there on their big day.
Toast to the Groom – Toast to the Bride
Now this may seem like an obvious one but many overlook it. At some point in your best man speech you will want to toast to the groom directly and tell him good things about the bride or about how he has positively affected her life. Then you will want to toast to the bride and do the same. Tell her the impact she has had on his life. Then you will want to address the two of them together and tell them something about the two of them together.
Make sure that during all of this that you haven’t completely turned away from the rest of the crowd and that they can see you as well. Also make sure to not lower your voice but to continue speaking loudly and clearly so that everyone can still hear you. There will probably be a camera or two there and you want to help the wedding couple preserve their memories of the best man wedding toast.
Raise Your Glass
Last but not least, you will want to turn to the crowd and raise your glass, asking everyone to join you. Then give them a few seconds to do so and make a short and simple toast to the bride and groom. That’s it! Of course you can add a few jokes in here and there and maybe even a story but this is a good basic structure for best man wedding toasts. Follow those simple steps to write great wedding toasts.
Now that you know what to say in a best man speech, all you have to do is to think exactly what you should talk about in each step. If you don’t have any ideas, I’ll post some “fill in the blanks” template for the best man speech.
